- Many forts are National Park Service or Parks Canada sites: check opening hours and fees on their website first.
- On weekends there are often demonstrations in period costume – the events calendar is worth a look.
- Some forts sit on islands and can only be reached by ferry, such as Fort Sumter or Fort Jefferson.
